CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Level 1 - Beginners Muay Thai Kickboxing

This class will introduce new participants to the fundamentals of Muay Thai kickboxing. The beginner level 1 curriculum consists of the fighting stance, weight transfers, concept of pivoting, balance, movement, and basic punching and kicking. People will also be instructed on the proper use of Thai pads. Participants are encouraged to stay in this level (usually for a minimum of three to five classes) until they have developed a solid foundation of the basics, and the instructors will determine if the participant is ready to move up to the next level.

Prerequisites: None, as this is where all new people will start.

Equipment needed: None. If you have your own boxing gloves and handwraps, you can bring that, otherwise you can borrow a class set. It is advisable that if you continue after your first class, you should look into getting your own handwraps and boxing gloves for hygenic reasons.

Level 2 Muay Thai Kickboxing

This next level builds upon the concepts learned in the beginner level 1 classes. Participants will be introduced to more complex punching and kicking techniques and combinations, in addition to learning elbows and knees. The pace of this class is faster, and integrates more use of Thai pads. Participants are required to stay in this level until they have achieved a high level of proficiency as outlined in the curriculum, which could take anywhere from four to six months of regular training.

Prerequisites: Demonstrates a high level of understanding of the beginner level 1 curriculum and approved by the instructor.

Equipment needed: By this level, participants should have their own handwraps and boxing gloves.

Level 3 Muay Thai Kickboxing

This class is for participants that have completed levels 1 and 2. Participants will advance to this level based on showing thorough and proficient understanding of the Level 2 curriculum, and graduated by an instructor. The Level 3 classes will be much more physically demanding and integrate heavy use of Thai pads, partner training, clinch work and complex combinations. Participants will learn and practice offensive and defensive tactics, and the instructors will incorporate controlled technical drilling.

Prerequisites: Demonstrates a high level of understanding of the Level 2 curriculum and approved by the instructor.

Equipment needed: Handwraps, boxing gloves, shinguards (cloth or moulded), mouthpiece and jocks (for men)

Muay Thai Kickboxing Sparring

This class is for participants that have been training regularly in the Level 3 classes for a minimum of six months and have been approved to participate in sparring by their instructor. The objective of this class is to compliment the Level 3 curriculum by allowing participants to integrate their Muay Thai knowledge and skills into light and controlled sparring. This class is also for those individuals interested in moving up to the competitive fighter's training where sparring is a key focus. Participants will learn: defence techniques, countering, clinching, sparring strategy and tactics, faints, fakes, and sweeps through technical drilling and light sparring.

Prerequisites: Regularly training in the Level 3 classes, demonstrates a high level of understanding of the Level 3 curriculum and approved by the instructor.

Equipment needed: Handwraps, boxing gloves (14 or 16oz only), moulded leather shinguards only (not cloth), mouthguard, and jock (for men)

Muay Thai Kickboxing Bootcamp

Drawing on the popularity of bootcamp-style workouts, TKMT has devised its own unique version. This intense and physically demanding class is designed for those people that want an incredible workout that will boost their cardiovascular and muscular endurance, burn a ton of calories and condition the whole body. Little emphasis will be placed on technical learning as carried out in the Level 2 and 3 Muay Thai Kickboxing classes, since the main focus of the bootcamp is to achieve a great and consistent burn. This class will heavily incorporate elements of plyometrics, body conditioning, resistance training and anaerobic burnouts. This class is guaranteed to be thoroughly challenging.

Prerequisites: Must be a Level 2 participant, except for Blaise's Saturday morning strength & conditioning bootcamp class at the uptown location where no Muay Thai Kickboxing experience is necessary. For all of the other bootcamp classes, if a participant is not in Level 2, he or she will not be allowed to take this class.

Equipment needed: Handwraps and boxing gloves.

Muay Boran

This is a specialized class that focuses on the ancient traditions in which Muay Thai was founded. Muay Boran, when translated, is known as "ancient boxing", and is the predecessor to the modern Muay Thai that is practiced today. Historically, Muay Boran was developed to allow the unarmed warrior to survive on the battlefield. As such, the philosophy behind the art is to subdue an opponent as quickly as possible by employing powerful and unorthodox blows designed to shatter the enemy's limbs. Muay Boran is the style practiced by the main character in the movie "Ong Bak". Our master from Thailand, Ajahn Amnat, instructs this class, and we are one of the very few Muay Thai academies in North America that teach this art.

Prerequisites: Must be a Level 3 participant.

Equipment needed: Handwraps, boxing gloves and shinguards (cloth or moulded).

Competitive Fighters' Training

This class designed for TKMT fighters to prepare for upcoming competitions in Canada and the USA. Heavy emphasis is placed on technical drilling, padwork, conditioning and sparring to not only survive, but to dominate our opponents in the ring. There is also a diet plan and a strict training, cardio, conditioning and weight cutting regimen in place for all of our fighters.

Prerequisites: You must be a seasoned participant in the sparring classes, and possess a very strong desire to compete. Let the admin team know that you're interesting in competing, and we will observe and decide if you're ready to fight based on your dedication to training and sparring. Understand that fighters preparing for upcoming competitions MUST train and do 5 to 10 km morning runs six days a week for at least a month leading up to their next fight.

Equipment needed: Same as the Muay Thai Kickboxing Sparring class listed above.
